Face Reading is one of the most ancient tools used for diagnosis in Chinese Medicine. Because palpation of the body was not a common practice, especially when treating women, the face became one of the easiest places to access the signs of internal organ function.

In the oldest manuscript of acupuncture ever discovered so far, Dr. Paul Unschuld of Germany found that the first page of this manuscript was a facial map containing 150 age positions while the second page was a diagram of the facial meridians. This same facial map is still in use today and is used to find the ages when trauma occurred that still affects current psychological and physical health. This map can best be described as a topographical representation of life experience.

The studio of the artist Tingqua was perhaps the most prolific source of Chinese export painting during the nineteenth century. Located at 16 China Street, Guangzhou, the school specialized in gouache and watercolor paintings influenced by Western artistic traditions. These works became known in America primarily through the American China trader Augustine Heard, who brought a substantial collection of Tingqua paintings back to the United States in ca. 1855. These are now located at the Peabody Museum in Salem, Massachusetts.

Tingqua was from a family of Chinese artists, each of whom were recognized for there skills in painting scenes suitable for the export market. His father, Guan Zuolin, often known by his western name, Spoilum, was the first identifiable artist of the Cantonese export school.

Tingqua's work is perhaps most recognized for its exquisite characterization of daily life and for its exceptional detail. The precision of the brushwork and concentration upon light effects is superb, and in each scene the importance of world trade with China is beautifully displayed.
'The streets of a Chinese city differ greatly from those of Europe, and are always extremely narrow, except at Nankin and Peking. They are paved crosswise with slabs of stone, usually worn down by the traffic to a hollow in the centre of the path, and this disagreeable substitute for the gutters of European throughfares forms the only means by which the rain-water is carried off'.
